Odonata (Dragon- and Damselflies) of Michigan

Our current state of knowledge about distribution of Odonata in Michigan is generally very good, especially in part due to recent surveys conducted by the Michigan Odonata Survey since 1997. These surveys have added many new state records, and other species listed in publications whose documentation was either wrong or dubious have been removed. Michigan now has 163 species in 50 genera recorded, with a possible additional 3 species that might occur in our state. Almost all the species of Michigan Odonata have had their larval stages reliably associated with adults, and most species-level identification of mature larvae is possible (although some genera have species that are very difficult to distinguish, and may require more thorough diagnoses). Please contact the author (ethanbr@umich.edu) or Mr. Mark O'Brien (mfobrien@umich.edu) to communicate information regarding additional verified species' records and locations.
