This information is drawn from literary sources, including Cassani and Newson (1980), which comprehensively surveyed records in collections and literature up to 1980, and Wilmot et al. 1987, 1992 and Wood et al. 1979. Taxonomy and distribution information has been recently updated by Darsie and Ward (2005).

Aedes Meigen, 1818 [Note: Reinert (2000) raised the subgenus of Ochlerotatus to genus, although many researchers as well as disease and pest control agencies still follow previous nomenclature in recognizing Ochlerotatus as a subgenus of Aedes, and keeping the subgenera Finlaya and Protomacleaya (which Reinert moved as subgenera of Ochlerotatus) as subgenera of Aedes.]
